New Orleans embraces its sweet tooth: Meet the Baby Cakes

The former New Orleans Zephyrs certainly had the most colorful options to choose from when renaming their team for 2017. There were two different kinds of pastries, animals and even a sandwich among the choices.

The Miami Marlins’ Triple A affiliate has settled on, perhaps, the most unique moniker in all of MiLB. They’ll be taking the field next season as the New Orleans Baby Cakes.

As silly as the name sounds at first, it’s actually rooted in the colorful history of The Big Easy. The name is derived from the king cakes, a staple of Mardi Gras, as explained in this video from WCCO in Minnesota:

The baby part of the team name has a double, for the baby inside the king cake, and because people in New Orleans often call each other “baby.”

The Cakes embrace the fun nature of their new name in color scheme and logo, with a unique green, gold and purple color scheme, which is sure to pop off any baseball cap.

Four on-field caps were revealed alongside the new name. The team’s batting practice cap features the team’s main logo with a baby bursting out of king cake, ready to step up to bat and mash some taters:

The Baby Cakes’ home cap zooms in on the above logo, focusing on the baby’s snarling visage:

The team’s road hat features a N.O. wordmark, with the O being a colorful king cake:

And an alternate cap features a neat NOLA logo with a fleur-de-lis:

It’s a slight disappointment that the laughing baby logo hasn’t made it to an on-field cap yet, but there’s still plenty of time to add it to their wardrobe before the 2017 season kicks off. Seriously, look at this little guy:

SO JOYFUL.

All of the team’s caps are available now at the Baby Cakes’ online store. There’s a quick preview of them in the picture at the top of our story, but once we get our hands on ‘em, we’ll have a closer look at them right here at Stuff on Baseball Caps.
